Chapter 192: The Artifact Revealed, the Quest Begins
The wind howled, the waves surged. The boat Ren Xiaoyao and Xia Lin were aboard was tossed like a fallen leaf across the boundless, turbulent sea, in danger of capsizing at any moment. Bean-sized raindrops, mingled with the salty smell of the sea, slammed fiercely into their faces, blurring their vision.
"Xiaoyao, we can't go on like this, the boat is going to fall apart!" Xia Lin grabbed the side of the boat tightly and shouted loudly, but her voice was torn into pieces by the whistling wind.
Ren Xiaoyao's face was grim as he gripped the oars tightly, struggling against the raging waves. His strong muscles tensed like a fully drawn bowstring, and sweat and rain mixed together, streaming down his cheeks. Yet, humanity seemed so insignificant before the fury of nature.
"Crack!"
With a crisp sound, the oar in Ren Xiaoyao's hand was broken in half by the sudden huge wave. The boat, out of control, was like a kite with a broken string, tossed up by the waves and then fell heavily.
"Hold on tight!" Ren Xiaoyao put his arm around Xia Lin's waist and held her tightly in his arms.
Amidst the raging waves, the two men locked eyes, their eyes filled with fear of the unknown. Ren Xiaoyao struggled to remain calm, but his heart grew heavier. Losing their oars would mean they would be completely lost in the vast ocean, at the mercy of fate.
"I must find a way to save myself!" Ren Xiaoyao thought to himself. He looked around, trying to find something he could use. However, he saw nothing but rolling waves and a gray sky.
"Xia Lin, can you sense any nearby islands or land?" Ren Xiaoyao asked with a hint of hope in his tone.
Charlene took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and tried to focus on her surroundings. However, the disruption caused by the violent storm was too great, and her perception was severely suppressed, unable to penetrate the layers of rain and waves.
"I..." Xia Lin was about to speak when her expression suddenly changed. She opened her eyes abruptly, grabbed Ren Xiaoyao's arm, and pointed forward in horror, "What is that?!"
Ren Xiaoyao looked in the direction Xia Lin pointed, and saw a huge shadow faintly appear on the sea ahead in the interval between the violent storm, rapidly approaching them...
The shadow grew larger and clearer, gradually revealing a hideous and terrifying face. It was a towering island, its cliffs and jagged cliffs piercing the sky like a sharp sword, appearing even more forbidding and sinister in the raging storm. And what was truly terrifying was that the countless reefs in the sea surrounding the island lurked like monsters, baring their sharp fangs, waiting for their prey.
"Oh no! It's Death Reef!" Xia Lin cried out, her face pale. Death Reef is the most dangerous place in this sea area, shrouded in fog year-round and full of hidden reefs. If you stray into it, there is almost no chance of survival.
"Damn it! I've encountered the Death Reef at this very moment!" Ren Xiaoyao cursed inwardly, feeling extremely anxious. He forced himself to calm down, observing the surroundings, trying to find a way out.
However, the violent storm showed no sign of abating, and the ship was shaking violently, threatening to be overturned by the huge waves at any time. To make matters worse, the cabin began to leak, and seawater continued to pour in, threatening to swallow the entire ship.
"Xiaoyao, the boat is going to sink!" Xia Lin shouted anxiously.
"Don't panic, I'll drain the water!" Ren Xiaoyao pulled Xia Lin to the side of the boat and asked her to hold the mast. He picked up the wooden barrel in the cabin and scooped out the sea water with all his strength.
However, the power of one person was too limited. The speed at which the seawater poured in was much faster than the speed at which he could scoop water. The boat sank deeper and deeper, and the side of the boat was getting closer and closer to the sea surface. It was about to be swallowed by the merciless sea water.
"This isn't going to work. We have to find a way to get closer to that island!" Ren Xiaoyao made a quick decision. Although the Death Reef was extremely dangerous, there was no other choice now. Instead of sitting and waiting for death, it was better to give it a try.
"But there are many reefs around Death Reef, and we can't get close at all!" Xia Lin said worriedly.
"Trust me, I'll find a way!" A flicker of determination flashed in Ren Xiaoyao's eyes. He protected Xia Lin behind him, his hands tightly gripping the rudder, his gaze fixed intently on the raging sea ahead, searching for a glimmer of hope...
"Hold on tight!" Ren Xiaoyao growled, jerking the rudder. The boat cut a dangerous arc across the turbulent sea, heading for the perilous Death Reef without hesitation...
The boat, like a fallen leaf, tossed forward amidst the surging waves. Ren Xiaoyao's gaze was sharp, his hands firmly on the rudder, and with extraordinary courage and skill, he navigated the treacherous reefs. The waves pounded against the boat, threatening to swallow the fragile vessel at any moment. The shadow of death hung heavy over both of them.
"Xiaoyao, be careful!" Xia Lin clutched the side of the boat tightly, staring nervously ahead. Suddenly, a huge reef appeared before her, like the fangs of a monster, flashing a cold light.
"Hold on!" Ren Xiaoyao shouted, turning the rudder sharply, and the boat narrowly avoided the reef by almost scraping it. Amidst the turbulent waves, Ren Xiaoyao's calmness and decisiveness were like a beacon in the storm, bringing a glimmer of hope to Xia Lin.
After an unknown amount of time, the boat finally broke through the blockade of the Death Reef and arrived at the edge of a small island. The island was shrouded in mist, and the shadows were hazy, like an ink painting.
"We succeeded!" Charlene shouted happily, but before she finished her words, her smile froze on her face.
The island was surrounded by dense reefs, like a solid wall, isolating it from the outside world. These reefs were hidden in the mist, making them even harder to detect. If one was not careful, the ship would be destroyed and people would die.
Ren Xiaoyao's face was solemn. He took a deep breath and calmly steered the boat, searching for a safe passage in the fog. The boat moved slowly, and every turn was extremely dangerous, as if dancing on the edge of a knife.
Finally, after a thrilling voyage, the boat successfully landed. Ren Xiaoyao and Xia Lin set foot on this mysterious island, and the humid sea breeze blew towards them, bringing with it an inexplicable chill.
The island was eerily quiet, with only the sound of waves crashing against the rocks echoing in their ears. Thick fog enveloped the entire island, reducing visibility to a minimum, as if invisible ghostly hands were trying to drag them into the abyss.
"Be careful, this fog is a bit strange." Ren Xiaoyao said in a low voice, tightening the hilt of the sword in his hand, a feeling of uneasiness surged in his heart.
The two walked forward cautiously, their feet on the soft sand, surrounded by an unknown world shrouded in mist. Suddenly, a ethereal and eerie singing voice rang out from the depths of the fog. The singing was sometimes high-pitched, sometimes low, like a call from hell, terrifying...
"This singing..." Xia Lin's face turned pale. She clutched Ren Xiaoyao's sleeve tightly, her voice trembling, "It seems like something is approaching..."
Ren Xiaoyao turned around suddenly, only to see a huge black shadow slowly moving in the depths of the fog, accompanied by that strange singing, getting closer and closer...
