Chapter 165 White Horse Temple
Chapter 165 White Horse Temple
The group climbed up the stone steps, surrounded by lush greenery. When they reached the halfway point, they saw the temple's red walls nestled among the trees.
The walls were covered with vines, and the glazed tiles on the top of the wall were emerald green and translucent, contrasting with the lush greenery around them.
"We've arrived!" Fan Yizhou led the way, telling the group as soon as he saw the temple walls.
"This temple looks very ancient." Lin Yu looked up and glanced at it.
“Yes, this temple must be very old. I think I came here when I was a child,” Quan Sinian recalled.
As soon as they stepped into the temple, they saw towering ancient trees that covered the entire courtyard. The thick trunks recorded the passage of time, and the dappled shadows swayed on the ground. Copper bells hung from the eaves.
The group didn't see any pedestrians outside, but there were quite a few people inside the temple, who had arrived quite early.
Small groups of worshippers entered and exited the main hall, which was filled with the aroma of incense. From the outside, only the golden body at the base of the Buddha statue could be seen.
"Come on, Ayan, let's go get a fortune stick." Quan Wenxue pulled Lin Yan along, put some money for incense at the little monk's place, and asked for a stick of incense.
The men behind them showed no intention of going in to pray; they waited outside for the two to draw lots.
Actually, Lin Yan doesn't worship Buddha; she doesn't believe in it. She just accompanied Quan Wenxue in.
Quan Wenxue knelt on the prayer mat, her hands clasped together, seemingly making a wish.
Lin Yan looked at the Buddha statue in the main hall. The golden body was about three stories high, and it was compassionate and solemn.
"Don't you worship Buddha, young lady?" A kind, deep voice came from the side.
Lin Yan turned her head to look in the direction from which the voice came, but looked around and did not see anyone who matched the voice.
She frowned deeply. There were young monks and worshippers seeking interpretations of fortune sticks over there, but it seemed that the person who was supposed to speak was not there.
"strangeness."
"Ayan! Ayan!"
"Ok?"
Lin Yan snapped out of her daze and saw Quan Wenxue holding a fortune stick. "How is it?"
"Xiao Ji, I'd say it's a bad omen," Quan Wenxue said softly, though she didn't seem particularly worried.
Lin Yan guessed that what she was asking for wasn't family or health.
Aren't you going to draw a fortune stick?
"I don't ask for it, and I don't believe in that stuff anyway."
"Huh?" Quan Wenxue opened her mouth in surprise. "How can you say that in front of a Buddha statue! Shut up!"
Lin Yan obediently shut her mouth and nodded.
"Come with me quickly to have your fortune told!"
Quan Wenxue found a young monk and gave him her fortune slip. The monk took out a fortune slip from a box.
Lin Yan glanced at it and saw that it read:
"Spring blossoms are suddenly struck by rain, branches sway and petals fall, a heart-wrenching sight. When the clouds part and the sun shines warmly, we'll join hands to admire the bright sunset."
Lin Yan didn't speak, but walked a little further away to wait on the other side for the young monk to interpret Quan Wenxue's fortune.
She walked further in, hoping to find the person who had spoken to her earlier, but found nothing.
After Quan Wenxue finished interpreting the fortune sticks, she called to her from the side, and she left with her.
Once outside, Fu Bo asked her, "How did it go? What did you ask for?"
"I didn't ask for anything."
“Since you’re already inside, why don’t you draw a fortune stick while you’re at it?” Fu Bo said in surprise.
"If you don't believe, then don't ask for it. If I have a goal, the so-called fortune slips will only affect me."
"It's just for good luck."
"Hey, are there only auspicious fortune slips in here?" Lin Yan suddenly remembered that Quan Wenxue said she prayed for a minor auspicious fortune slip, but it was considered an inauspicious one.
“Yes. Even if there are difficulties, there will always be a good outcome. Consider it a consolation,” Quan Wenxue said softly.
"What did you ask for, Wenxue?" Quan Sinian asked his sister.
Quan Wenxue glanced at him but did not respond.
Zhao Yunqing's gaze swept over them unintentionally.
Lin Yan raised an eyebrow, trying to smooth things over, "Whatever a young lady is asking for, you shouldn't concern yourself with it!"
As she spoke, Lin Yan remembered something and said to Quan Sinian, "Take care of yourself first. Why don't you go in and pray for a good marriage and see when your true love will come? That way, my mother won't keep watching you."
“And you too.” Lin Yan gestured to Fu Bo.
"Uh." The two of them froze in place, Quan Sinian was genuinely embarrassed.
Fu Bo was genuinely bewildered. "Why is Aunt Lin staring at me like that?"
Lin Yu smiled without saying a word.
Quan Wenxue sighed.
Fan Yizhou glanced at the group with deep eyes and smiled.
"If we go out from here, we can continue up the mountain to the viewing platform, where we can see a panoramic view of Baiyun Mountain. Shall we go up?"
“Okay, it’s still early, let’s go up the mountain first and then have lunch.” Zhao Yunqing nodded.
After leaving the main hall, the group walked towards the back, intending to exit through the temple's back gate. There, they saw a small pond filled with lotus flowers, and Quan Wenxue pulled Lin Yan to take a look.
Seeing that the person had been attracted away, the other men had no choice but to follow.
"Please be careful, ladies, there's no fence around this pond," Fan Yizhou warned.
Lin Yu leaned closer, "Don't we have that at home too? What's so interesting about this!"
Lin Yan gave him a light glare, "Shut up."
The two were about to leave after watching for a while when Lin Yan turned around and suddenly saw an old abbot standing by the pond.
Lin Yan was startled: she really hadn't noticed anyone here at all.
The abbot stared intently at her, his eyes deep and unfathomable, as if they held endless wisdom and stories. Lin Yan felt as if she had been completely seen through, as if she were transparent, with all her thoughts and secrets exposed.
"Who are you?" Lin Yan asked.
Quan Wenxue and Lin Yu were also drawn over, "Is this a monk from a temple?"
The old monk performed a Buddhist salute. "Young lady, you don't believe in Buddhism." The old monk's voice was slow and weathered, but his tone was very firm.
Lin Yan raised an eyebrow. Wasn't that the same voice she had heard in the main hall?
"So what if I don't believe in Buddhism?"
The old monk gently shook his head. "All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows. Sentient beings have come from beginningless time and will go without end. This life is the result of the previous life."
"What do you mean?" Lin Yu suddenly turned serious, stood in front of Lin Yan, stared directly at the old monk, his eyes were completely different from usual, cold and sharp.
“You all know this.”
Lin Yan: I know...‰c3√, is this old monk saying I'm fake? Or am I dreaming?
"Master, is there any guidance you can offer?" Zhao Yuncheng stood among the group, blocking the old monk's view.
The old monk stared at Zhao Yuncheng for a moment, smiled, turned and left, saying, "Nothing more than this: all things arise from causes and conditions, all are predestined!"
"Master Xunyin?" Fan Yizhou looked at the old monk's departing figure with some doubt.
"How strange, what did he mean by what he just said?" Quan Wenxue grabbed Lin Yan's arm and pulled even tighter.
"Don't worry about him. These old monks always talk in such a cryptic way. They seem to say a lot, but they haven't really said anything," Zhao Yunqing said casually, easing the pressure on everyone.
Lin Yan was somewhat alarmed, not because of what the monk had said, but because she was alarmed that this guy had appeared next to her without her noticing.
Zhao Yuncheng glanced at her and said, "Don't take it to heart. Since you don't believe in Buddhism, what you see is not real, but it is also real."
Lin Yu grabbed Lin Yan's hand and pulled her away with his head down.
